So, you’ve arrived in your student accommodation in Lancaster, the year is getting well under way and you’re enjoying getting to know your fellow students. Everything seems to be going so well, until you find yourself in the middle of nowhere, stranded on one of the buses.

Getting to grips with bus timetables in a new city can be a rather complicated process, but don’t worry, we’ve put together a handy little guide that should help you figure it all out, so you’ll be able to get to and from campus like a pro.

Lancaster University Campus Buses

The good news is that Lancaster University benefits from one of the most frequent campus-to-city-centre timetables in the UK. So, if you find yourself on campus, desperately needing to get to Sainsbury’s to pick up some all-important supplies, you’ll be pleased to know that there are typically up to 14 buses per hour from Monday to Saturday during the day in term time. A less frequent service then runs daily until around midnight, with a limited, later night bus (N1) service during term time.

Key Stops for Arrivals & Departures:

All the buses drop off and collect passengers from the Underpass, which you can find underneath Alexandra Square in the centre of campus, except for an hourly 40 or 41 bus that calls at the University gates only. Additionally, the 2 and 42, along with certain 4, 40 and 41 buses serve the southern perimeter road and South West campus. There are also stops directly outside the Sports Centre on the main drive, and all buses which serve the Underpass stop here, so you’ll be able to jump off here to attend that all-important yoga class.

Late and Night Buses:

After 7pm, services are less frequent but continue until around midnight most days. The N1 night bus provides an extra-late service during university terms, from the Underpass to the city centre (Lancaster Bus Station) with a single daily departure at 01:15, including Friday and Saturday nights.

Getting to Campus from Town

With CityBlock conveniently found on Penny Street, as well as our new builds in the centre of the city, all you have to do is walk a short distance to George Street and head to stand E. There you’ll find the regular direct service of the number 1 bus which will drop you off at the University, just a 10-minute drive away.

Main Routes:

The bus station can be found on Damside Street, and most services also stop at Common Garden Street. As well as the 1 bus which provides a service every 10 minutes, the 1A, 4, 4X, 40, 41, 42 and 100 also serve the University.

University of Cumbria Students:

If you’re a student at the University of Cumbria, the Lancaster campus is only a 5-minute walk from your CityBlock accommodation.

Free Sainsbury’s Student Bus

For students wanting to do their weekly shop, Sainsbury’s offers a free bus service every Wednesday during term time. To use the bus, you simply need to spend a minimum of £5 in Sainsbury’s.

Departures from Lancaster University Underpass from 11:00 then every 55 mins past the hour until 13:55 then resume again from 17:23 and 18:23. The bus also collects passengers at Bowerham Hotel, about 10 minutes later.

Departures from Sainsbury’s start at 11:25 then every 25 mins past the hour until 14:25 then resumes for 17:00, 18:00, and 19:00. The return service drops at Bowerham Hotel, 13 minutes after leaving Sainsbury’s.

Seats can fill up quickly, especially around midday, so it’s a good idea to be at the stop early and keep your Sainsbury’s receipt handy for the return journey.

UniRider and UniRider Gold

While you’re a student, it’s definitely worth looking into the Lancaster UniRider, which gives unlimited travel on all Stagecoach services in Lancaster and surrounding areas. For those living outside the Lancaster UniRider zone or wanting to explore further, such as Preston, or The Lake District, the UniRider Gold pass covers a much wider area. Both passes can be bought online with student ID, and offer annual, termly, and flexible options for regular travel.

National Buses

Want to get out of Lancaster for the day? Megabus and National Express services run from both the campus underpass and Lancaster bus station, serving most of the UK, with booking recommended in advance for best fares and seat choice. Megabus tickets now also give access to National Express routes for wider travel options.

UK Bus Tips

Lancaster’s buses include a variety of single and double-decker vehicles, providing flexible capacity depending on the route and time of day. Many of the buses are equipped with USB charging points for phones and other devices, making it easier for students to stay connected and powered up on the go.

Just remember to:

Always check the bus number and destination on the front before boarding.

Wave as the bus approaches to let the driver know you want to get on.

Queue up behind the people in front of you waiting for the bus and allow people exit the bus before getting on.

Have payment ready before boarding. Payment is made when boarding; most services accept contactless cards or cash. Mobile ticketing is widely used.

If you need help, ask the driver, they’re generally happy to help.

Timetables may change for holidays or university term time, so double check before important journeys, especially evening or late-night buses.

Keeping Up to Date

Bus timetables and routes may change throughout the year, especially at the start of university terms or during holidays. Always check for the latest schedule using:

Stagecoach Bus app (live tracking, mobile tickets, service alerts)

Official Lancaster bus users website

Lancashire County Council timetables and service updates

Bustimes.org for real-time departure information

One of the mainstays of student life is the nightlife, and if you’re coming to Lancaster University to study and nightlife is important to you then you’ll find it’s no exception.

If it’s your first time away from home then venturing out into an unknown city for the first time can be quite daunting, and you might not know the best bars or pubs to go to, or even where they are. However, Lancaster University’s campus is well-known for its lively nightlife, and it’s just a 15 minute bus ride to the university from our CityBlock apartments, with a regular bus service running to and from the city centre to the campus.

Pubs & Bars

The campus has a multitude of venues that provide a vibrant and lively student atmosphere in a home from home environment, catering specially for the student lifestyle.

Here at CityBlock we’ve put together the ultimate guide to Lancaster University’s pubs and bars to ensure that you can get the best on-campus experience when going out.

The Northern Oak: County College

This bar offers a wonderful contemporary atmosphere. During the day, it’s a popular chill out bar where students come to drink coffee or eat snacks from a wide range of different light bites on offer, but during the evening, it offers a livelier atmosphere. With regular live music performances every alternate Wednesday and fortnightly stand-up from the County Comedy Club, this bar is a great place to go with your mates. This bar is very popular with societies, and is known for its lively fun and friendly atmosphere.

Trevor bar has been open for more than 40 years! This bar hosts a number of exciting events throughout the year, including its very own real ale festival in December. In addition, it’s the home of many other college socials including international theme nights and Jam-in-Furness, the bar’s jazz night. Trevor is a vibrant and lively bar and it’s one of the traditional starting points for the vast majority of college socials.  Trevor was recently re-launched, and now has a great selection of quality wines, along with all of its usual favourites.  It also has a range of locally brewed ales from Lancaster University’s on-campus brewery.

The Mill: Fylde College

With its recently re-launched food menu, The Mill boasts that it’s currently the only place in Lancaster where you can buy a crocodile, kangaroo or even a llama burger! They also serve food until 9:30pm, seven days a week, and have an excellent menu with a wide variety of different foods such as burrito wraps, pizzas and burgers. If you’re looking for great place to watch sports with your mates, then this is the place for you. All major fixtures are shown throughout the bar on HDTVs, as well as their big screen.

Grizedale Cafe Bar: Grizedale College

Located at Lancaster University’s South Spine, the Grizedale Café Bar is one of the main hubs when it comes to starting off on a night out around Lancaster University’s campus, and also when it comes to eating great food. This bar has a wonderful contemporary atmosphere, along with a wonderful menu of top quality food including delicious pizzas, hot wraps and scrumptious doughnuts. This is also the place to go on campus for classy cocktails.

Barkers: Cartmel College

Tucked away in Cartmel College on the South West Campus, Barkers is one of those places that feels instantly familiar. It’s the kind of bar where you can settle in for a chilled pint, catch the match with mates, or just grab something decent to eat between lectures. The menu’s full of proper pub favourites, think burgers, loaded fries, and a Sunday roast that’s got a bit of a reputation across campus.

It’s also a solid spot for events, with a lively atmosphere when things kick off, but still laid-back enough for a quiet coffee during the day. Speaking of which, they serve Starbucks, so whether you’re after a flat white or something sweet and frothy, you’re sorted. Barkers isn’t flashy, but that’s part of the charm, it’s reliable, friendly, and always a good shout when you’re on the South West side of campus.

Restaurants

It’s not all about the bars, campus also has some great spots for food and coffee. Whether you’re after something fresh and healthy, a proper meal, or just a good brew, there are a few places that stand out.

HIVE

HIVE sits on the first floor of Health Innovation One and brings a fresh, relaxed vibe to the campus. It’s known for its healthy, feel-good menu, with vegan and low-sugar options that actually taste good. You’ll find locally sourced Atkinson’s coffee, fresh meals, and a few sweet treats too. Whether you’re grabbing lunch or meeting up for a chat, it’s a bright, open space that makes it easy to hang out or get stuff done.

The Marketplace

Up on North Campus in County South, The Marketplace is a solid choice for a proper hot meal. The menu changes daily, always offering two meat options and something veggie, plus hot sides and a fresh salad bar. It’s a good shout if you’re after something filling and balanced, and they serve Costa coffee too, made fresh at the bar.

The Deli

Right off Alexandra Square, The Deli is a cosy spot with a brunch menu that covers everything from pancakes and mac n’ cheese to fresh salads and flatbreads. They serve Atkinson’s coffee and specialty teas, making it a great place to grab something warm and tasty in the middle of the day.

Still Stay in The Loop

We’re taking a closer look at what makes Lancaster an ideal destination for students. Lancaster’s size is one of its greatest strengths for students. Unlike larger cities like Manchester, Lancaster offers a quieter, more focused environment where academic success can flourish without overwhelming distractions. Whether you’re a prospective student or already studying here, this guide will help you discover why Lancaster stands out as a premier student city.

Major Connections

Lancaster is situated on the West Coast Main Line, offering excellent rail connections to major cities across the UK. You can reach London in just 2.5 hours by direct train or head to Manchester in just over an hour—perfect for weekend trips or visits home during term breaks. Scotland is also easily accessible via train routes from Lancaster station. For international students, Manchester Airport is only about an hour away by direct train service, making global travel convenient despite Lancaster’s smaller size.

Lancaster Canal

The Lancaster Canal runs through the city centre and connects several towns and villages. Built in the 18th century, it was originally designed to transport coal from southern Lancashire to Preston and the northern farmlands. Today, the canal features charming canal boats and offers a scenic walking route from Garstang through meadows and dairy farms to Galgate. It crosses the River Lune on an impressive aqueduct before reaching Hest Bank and continues to Carnforth, where you can enjoy stunning views of the Lake District. The canal provides a gentle walking experience with beautiful wildlife and picturesque scenery.

The Coffee

Lancaster is home to a strong coffee culture vibe thanks to all its independent coffee houses dotted about the city, including the famous Atkinson & Co. coffee roasters. Established in 1837, the wonderful aroma of coffee from Atkinsons can be found floating down China Street. They supply coffee beans to many of the coffee houses in Lancaster and have two of their own cafes, The Hall and The Music Room, which are popular venues for students. You can also purchase a vast array of coffee beans and other coffee accessories (as well as some teas and hot chocolates) from the shop itself to enjoy at home.

Pubs and Bars

The city is full of independent pubs and bars, making for a vibrant nightlife. The Three Mariners, the oldest pub in Lancaster, dates back to the 15th century and sits inside a Grade II listed building. Or, for a more up-to-date experience, you can head to Tipple on King Street for a delicious cocktail. When it comes to a night out, there are so many places to choose from.

Arts and Culture

Lancaster boasts a vibrant arts scene with various cultural activities for students, including music and literature festivals. The Dukes, an independent theatre and cinema, features theatrical performances and independent films. Students can also enjoy two popular board game cafes, Board and Sword as well as Tabletop Republic, which are great for relaxing with friends after lectures. For those interested in pool or snooker, several halls in the city such as Squires offer competitive fun. Don’t miss term-time events like university traditions or local festivals such as Light Up Lancaster and Christmas markets in Dalton Square, providing memorable experiences with friends while exploring the city.

Cycleways

Lancaster is home to 50 miles of cycleways in and around the city, making for a fantastic place for people who love to get out and about. The Lancaster University campus has a cycle path that goes directly to the city centre, making getting from campus to town a breeze. The Lancaster to Morecambe promenade is just three miles away, or you can follow the River Lune from Glasson Dock to the Forest of Bowland.

Lancaster Market

If you want to experience authentic Lancashire produce like cheeses or potted shrimp from Morecambe Bay, look out for the weekly traditional market every Wednesday and Saturday in the centre of Lancaster. Here, you can buy fresh fruit and vegetables, homemade cakes, craft supplies, books, and flowers, or indulge in some street food from one of the many vendors.

Why Choose Lancaster?

Whether you’re looking for a focused academic environment, exciting recreational activities, or vibrant city life, Lancaster has something for everyone.

Lancaster is a vibrant city brimming with hidden gems, captivating stories, and a rich history that students can dive into. Whether you’re considering Lancaster as your next home, have just chosen it, or have been studying at the university for years, you might still uncover surprises about this remarkable city. Here’s a collection of intriguing tidbits about Lancaster that every student should know!

Do you Know How Lancaster Got Its Name?

Lancaster was first recorded in the Doomsday Book in 1086 as Loncastre. ‘Lon’ refers to the River Lune, that lovely river that flows beneath the blue Millennium Bridge, and ‘castre’ to both the Old English word cæster and the Latin castrum, which means ‘fort’ in reference to the Roman fort that stood where Lancaster Castle now resides. So, loosely, the name Lancaster means river fort. As a town that was built around the strategic location of its castle we think that’s a very apt name indeed!

They Hung Witches At Williamson Park

For many students living in Lancaster, Williamson Park is a beloved local gem. It’s a great spot to go for a run, enjoy leisurely walks, or partake in vibrant festivals like Highest Point and The Dukes’ outdoor theatre productions. The park offers stunning views and a sense of community, making it a perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of city life. Nestled within this beautiful setting is the Ashton Memorial, a striking building that was constructed in honour of Lord Ashton’s wife. While many visitors appreciate its architectural beauty and romantic backstory, there’s more to this hill than meets the eye.

What you might not know is that this seemingly idyllic spot has a dark history; prior to the 1800s, Gallows Hill, where the memorial stands, was the site of executions in Lancashire. It was here that nine out of the ten Pendle witches were hanged in 1612, with the tenth meeting her fate in York. The same hill that offers clear views over Morecambe Bay once echoed with the sombre sounds of so called justice and punishment. It’s a stark reminder of the human stories woven into the fabric of this picturesque park.

A Haunted City

Lancaster‘s rich history is intertwined with eerie tales of the supernatural, making it a hotspot for ghost enthusiasts. Beyond the usual haunted pubs, there are even darker corners of the city that intrigue paranormal investigators.

One such location is Ridge Lea Hospital, part of the former Lancaster Moor Hospital complex, where one of the buildings has now been renovated and turned into houses and flats (pictured above). Originally opened in 1816 as the Lancaster County Lunatic Asylum, it was renowned for pioneering humane treatment for mental illness. This abandoned mental asylum, which closed in 2013, has become a magnet for urban explorers and ghost hunters due to its chilling atmosphere and derelict state.

Lancaster Castle itself remains one of the city’s most haunted landmarks. With over 200 executions on-site and connections to the infamous Pendle Witch Trials, visitors frequently report chilling experiences such as whispers, footsteps, and even being pushed by unseen forces. Paranormal groups have captured shadowy figures on CCTV and witnessed blue orbs in the Well Tower, where the Pendle witches were imprisoned.

Coldest Ever Recorded Temperature

Lancaster University holds the record for creating a cutting-edge low-temperature laboratory, where they have reached temperatures as low as 0.001 Kelvin, which is an astonishing -274.149 °C!

In 1984, they broke the low-temperature record. Then, in 1993, they achieved an astounding temperature of 7 microkelvin, which translates to 0.000007 Kelvin or -273.149 °C, by cooling a small piece of copper. It’s important to note that these extremely low temperatures are created under laboratory conditions and do not naturally occur. The coldest natural temperature in the universe is about 2.7 Kelvin (-270.45°C), represented by the cosmic microwave background radiation left over from the Big Bang.

The Monarch is Our Duke

Whoever the reigning monarch is also holds the title of Duke of Lancaster. The Duchy of Lancaster has been a continuous title of the reigning English monarch since 1413, with the first monarch to hold the title being King Henry IV. Before the current monarch, King Charles III, the last person to hold the title of Duke of Lancaster was Queen Elizabeth II, who was the longest-reigning monarch in history. This title signifies both nobility and provides income for the monarchy, continuing to play an important role in the royal lineage.

The Wrong One Way

Rumour has it that Lancaster’s infamous one-way system was destined to go the other way. But alas, our esteemed buses could not make the climb up the hill beside the bus station and so it was decided that they would have a much easier time zooming down that very same hill in an alarming manner instead. It was probably the 2A that failed to arrive up the hill in a timely manner; it’s always the 2A.

Birthplace of Dinosaurs

Ever wondered where Lancaster’s Wetherspoons got its name? Born in Lancaster in 1804, Richard Owen was one of six children who went on to become an outstanding naturalist with an astonishing gift for interpreting fossils. He left the world with an array of scientific work and knowledge, but he is undoubtedly remembered most for coining the term Dinosauria, meaning ‘terrible reptile.’

Owen was also fiercely opposed to Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution by natural selection, or more specifically; he thought that it was much more complicated than Darwin had considered. He can be said to have anticipated some of the issues that have occurred in the study of evolution in the past two centuries. His contribution to science, controversies notwithstanding, was enormous, and he’s one of the most passionate scientists Lancaster has ever produced!

Another year has come to an end, and what a year 2023 has been! So whether it was one of the best 12 months of your life or you faced some struggles and challenges, let’s take some time to reflect on the past year and explore what went well and what we’ll do differently next year.

In this blog, we’re offering some top tips on creating a new you in the new year. January is filled with a sense of renewal and is a perfect chance to set some new goals with an opportunity to reflect on how you’re living your life currently and make some positive changes. Whether you plan on improving your mental health, budgeting better, or transforming your style, here is some advice to get you started.

Develop Better Study Habits

More time in the library might be exactly what you need in 2024! So many students start an academic year with great intentions and are highly motivated to study. But then the pub crawls start, that new game gets released, or your favourite show gets put on Netflix, and many of those plans go straight out the window.

A new year is an opportunity to leave all that behind and get a fresh start on your studying habits. Spend at least half an hour to an hour a day revising subjects or working on that all-important paper, and you’ll see the results in no time! Choosing your bed instead of lectures seems like a cosy idea, especially during winter, but you’re only letting yourself down by doing this. In contrast, at CityBlock’s student flat, dedicated common spaces provide an excellent study atmosphere, allowing you to stay motivated and focused on your academic goals.

Make sure to seize every day and make the most out of your university experience by actively pursuing your degree and improving your study habits.

Join Clubs and Societies

Universities are full of amazing clubs and societies, ranging from hockey to theatre, baking to gaming, and every other interest in between. If you didn’t join any in your first term, the start of the new year is a fantastic opportunity to sign up for that club you were interested in but never got around to joining.

Lancaster Uni offers an extensive selection of student-run societies with which you can get involved. Whether you are looking to pursue a passion, pick up a new hobby, or simply want to meet like-minded individuals, there is likely a club that aligns perfectly with your interests.

For those residing in student accommodation in Lancaster, be sure to mark your calendar for Lancaster University’s Refreshers Fair in the new year. This event offers you a second chance to meet all the societies, almost as if it’s Freshers’ Fair all over again. Societies are great places to meet people who share a common interest with you, making it the perfect opportunity to make lifelong friends.

Get Organised

The first term of university can be a bit of a whirlwind. Aside from getting used to the new ways of learning, you also have to adjust to cooking your own meals, washing your own clothes, and generally learning how to take care of yourself without your parents around. It’s easier to stay organised when you have your friends around you, which is why our student rooms in Lancaster offer group bookings to make your university experience better by living with like-minded peers.

Still, moving into your student accommodation can be a lot to deal with if it’s your first time away from home. If you feel like you may have become a little disorganised as a result of trying to adjust to your new university way of life, get yourself a calendar and make a point of trying to get everything organised. Schedule your time for social activities, extra-curricular activities, study time, me-time, and anything else you can think of.

Do Something Different

Make it one of your resolutions to expand your horizons! 2024 is the perfect opportunity to experience new things and develop your skill set. You could commit to pursuing something you’ve always wanted to do but never had the opportunity or motivation for before. For example, try to read one book every month for a year, give up unhealthy snacks, quit smoking or learn belly dancing. The options are limitless, so challenge yourself to accomplish something you will be proud of.

Perhaps your resolution to do something different involves getting to know new people. If this is the case, CityBlock is the ideal place to reside while at university. The teams behind our student accommodation in Lancaster organise regular pizza nights, game nights, and movie nights, which give you a great chance to get to know who you’re living with.

Be Savvier with Money

Another common resolution is to spend less money. After all, how many more times can you spend your entire student loan in a week before enough is enough? If you’re not used to living alone, getting the hang of budgeting and creating better spending habits can take a while.

Try implementing some small changes to see your savings grow. For example, walking instead of taking the bus, scaling down on eating out, and cooking homemade meals instead can help your budget go further. And remember that shopping for new clothes isn’t always necessary; often, the clothes you own already can be mixed and matched to create fresh looks. However, if you absolutely need new items, shopping in charity stores is a great eco-friendly and budget-savvy alternative.

Choosing your accommodation wisely can also make a significant difference in your spending. Being centrally located means you’re close to local amenities, so you can run your errands easily without resorting to often pricey online deliveries.

Also, try alternatives to nights out at the pub. If you want to spend some time with your friends, why not invite them to your student accommodation and watch TV together or play board games?

Make a Plan

Graduation might be a while off yet, but that’s no reason to avoid thinking about the future. In 2024, why not try and plan ahead? Think about where you’d like to be after graduation and see if there’s anything you can do now to help get you a little closer to that goal. Whether setting up an internship for the summer, some work experience opportunities, or even just working on some killer cover letters, there are plenty of ways to get ahead in your future career, and the new year is the perfect time to get it all sorted.

Become a Healthier Version of Yourself

Whatever this means for you, whether you want to become physically fitter or work on improving your mental health, January is a great place to start. There are plenty of gyms that offer newbie discounts during the new year, and your university may even have a gym or sports clubs to help you work on your physical health.

Importantly, our student housing in Lancaster is designed with your well-being in mind. The architecture and layout of our properties aim to foster a sense of community among students, as we believe that interactions with others play a significant role in mental well-being.

Additionally, if you’re struggling to get out of a rut and want a happier 2024, then getting help as soon as possible is the best solution. CityBlock staff are mental-health-trained and are here to support you and guide you in the right direction, should you need it. Similarly, your flatmates and others at your university may be going through something similar, and a problem shared is a problem halved, so never fear speaking out and asking for help from those around you.

Follow Through

Finish what you start. Year after year, we tend to make promises to ourselves that we end up not keeping, so set achievable goals and make a change in your life. Your future will thank you for starting now.

Being a university student is one of the best times of your life, so take advantage of it by doing everything you ever wanted to do! Here at CityBlock, we make it our New Year’s resolution to help you get the best accommodation for your student needs. Get in touch with our team today to make your booking for the New Year!
The post New Year, New You first appeared on CityBlock.

It’s finally Christmas time! The decorations are everywhere, the festive music is blasting from every radio, and the shops are filled with plenty of Christmas treats. It’s impossible to walk through Lancaster in the evening and not get into the festive spirit.

At CityBlock, we’re thrilled to call Lancaster our home all year round (as are our many residents), but during this time of year, the city has a special air of magical charm. With events, markets, and festivities around every corner, it gives us the opportunity to share the joy of Christmas, integrate, and celebrate together.

We want students to have the best experiences when staying with CityBlock, especially those who aren’t travelling home during the festive period. That’s why, in today’s article, we’ll show you a fun way to spend this magical time in Lancaster.

Exploring Lancaster’s Christmas Market

We’ll start with one of the classics – a Christmas market, because who doesn’t love them?

This year, our residents who have re-booked their student accommodation in Lancaster will be pleased to know the award-winning Christmas markets return to Dalton Square for the 2023 season. Known for its outstanding stalls and Giant Tipi Bar, it’s a must-visit for students looking to embrace the festive season in all its glory. A main highlight is the internationally acclaimed ‘Lancaster on Ice,’ featuring a sprawling 800m real ice rink for those with steady balance! This unmissable wintertime event also includes a giant Ferris Wheel, giving breathtaking views of your home away from home.

Festive Indoor Celebrations in Lancaster

If you’re not up for braving the cold, there are also plenty of events to attend that don’t require you to stay outside in the Lancastrian weather! Let’s look closer at some of the events taking place indoors this December.

The Mayor’s Christmas Carols Concert

Taking place at Lancaster Town Hall, the Mayor’s Christmas Carol Concert will let you feel the magic of Christmas carols, all while supporting a fantastic local cause: St John’s Hospice. With an entry fee of £10, you get to enjoy a beautiful concert while donating to a charity that deserves every penny.

Christmas Plays

If you’re a fan of the theatre, it’s worth checking out this season’s plays at Lancaster Grand Theatre. From Sleeping Beauty (a classic panto) to Rapunzel (an adults-only panto!), you can expect to find something to watch this Christmas. But be quick; some of the shows are already sold out, so make sure to book it in advance!

A Christmas Carol Musical

A Christmas Carol is a must-see, classic Christmas story that takes place in Victorian England, so what better setting to watch it than the historic city of Lancaster? You’ll have a chance to see the performance until the end of December at The Dukes Theatre. What’s more? This is only a few minutes’ walk from our central student flats in Lancaster, meaning if you wrap up warm, you can make it before the show starts in no time.

Christmas Shopping Made Easy

When it comes to shopping, Christmas is always the busiest time of the year as everyone’s rushing to get all the presents ready before the 25th. Being a student, we understand it can be difficult to manage your time, especially if you have assignments throughout the month. So, if you’re thinking “How do I manage shopping and the exams month?” we’ve got some good news for you!

During the festive season, one of the most popular places for shopping in Lancaster, Marketgate Shopping Centre, has extended opening hours. Even though it normally closes at 5:30pm, on selected days before Christmas, it’s open until 9pm. And, for those last-minute buys, it opens from 10:30am – 4:30pm on Christmas Eve, meaning that all the busy bees will be able to do the necessary shopping before the big day.

Creating a Warm Christmas Atmosphere in Your CityBlock Accommodation

If, for the Christmas season, you’re staying in our Lancaster student apartments, it’s important to make the best of your situation and get into the festive spirit! So here, we’ll show you how to make your accommodation cosy and magical with some budget-friendly ideas for decorating your space.

Christmas Lights

Use classic Christmas lights to decorate your flat, both in communal areas and in your room. You can use it to create a ‘starry sky’ effect by placing the lights on the ceiling or hang them on the curtains to brighten up the window. Whatever you choose to do, once hung, you have the perfect backdrop for your Christmas selfies!

Personalised Decorations

Why not get crafty with your flatmates? Organise an evening where you get together and create DIY ornaments. Pop on a Christmas film or your favourite festive playlist and have fun with it. It’s a great opportunity to bond with your friends, and in the end, you have beautiful handmade decorations to use. Top tip: to make it more sustainable, you can make it out of the things that you already have in the flat.

Greenery

Christmas trees, wreaths, and garlands can transform your space into a cosy sanctuary, giving it a sense of homeliness during the holiday season. These additions not only serve as reminders of joyous festivities, but the addition of greenery and plants provides a therapeutic environment that supports mental health and overall well-being.

CityBlock: Your Home Base for Christmas in Lancaster

We know there’s no place like home during Christmas time, but as CityBlock is your home away from home, we still want to provide the best experiences for those who are staying with us.
As a student, choosing the right accommodation is one of the key decisions you will make on your academic journey. With so many options available, it can be challenging to determine which one suits your needs and preferences the best.

Luckily, CityBlock is here to help with expert advice and top tips to guide you through these important decisions. Today, we will explore the differences between purpose-built and multiple occupancy student housing to ensure you make the best choice for yourself and end up in accommodation that supports your way of living.

So, join us as we delve into the advantages of purpose-built housing, such as our accommodation blocks and discover why it’s most likely the ideal choice for your academic journey.

Purpose-Built Student Accommodation

Purpose-built student accommodation is housing specifically designed and built with the needs of students in mind, such as our student accommodation in Lancaster. This type of student housing aims to provide a comfortable and convenient living environment with extensive benefits; let’s take a look.

Guaranteed Cleaning Services

We understand that students have busy schedules, and managing their studies and living environment can be challenging. This is why we offer weekly cleaning services as part of our all-inclusive accommodation package.

Having a clean living space not only helps maintain good hygiene but also alleviates stress and provides a comfortable and organised living environment. Our commitment to offering weekly cleaning services is just one of the many ways we cater to the diverse needs of our students and enhance their overall living experience in our purpose-built accommodation.

Close Proximity to City Centres and University Campuses

It offers convenient access to academic facilities, services, entertainment, and transport links, offering a sense of convenience and connectivity.
Purpose-built student housing gives you the option to live with your friends. And, at CityBlock, our Group Booking means if you book with six or more friends, you each get a £50 Amazon voucher!

Our accommodation is designed with a sense of community for students to live with their friends. We offer a variety of room types and configurations, allowing students to choose to live together in ensuite rooms or studios. Our luxury common rooms and communal spaces also provide the perfect setting for socialising and making lasting friendships.

Multiple Occupancy Student Housing

Multiple Occupancy Student Housing (MOSH) is student accommodation where several students share a house or apartment. Each student typically has their room, but they share common areas such as living rooms, kitchens, and bathrooms. MOSH may not be the best fit for everyone. Let’s take a look at why this might not be the best choice for you and why purpose-built is always the better option.

Noise Risks

Living in MOSH comes with noise risks, as unregulated shared common areas and neighbours can contribute to higher noise levels. These situations can be difficult to manage, especially because the property owner may have little to no involvement with your welfare, and any problems that do arise due to noise could take a while to resolve.

Less Privacy

Students residing in multiple occupancy student housing face privacy concerns as they live in shared spaces with limited personal room. Although communal housing promotes social interaction, it might not provide the necessary personal space to many students, leading them to seek alternative ways to maintain privacy. Such concerns can severely impact a student’s well-being and mental health, especially if the lack of privacy makes them feel unsafe where they live.

Laundry Struggles

There are often very few laundry facilities in multiple occupancy student housing, which is inconvenient and time-consuming, especially if many students have to share what’s there. Students may need to wait in line or make prior arrangements to access the machines, which can lead to frustration and missed opportunities to do laundry. At CityBlock, we provide excellent laundry facilities that meet students’ needs and expectations to ensure a comfortable living experience.

Potential Housemate Problems

While housemate problems could occur no matter where you live, you are much more likely to experience issues in MOSH because of the smaller shared spaces and lack of facilities.

For example, conflicts over noise levels, cleanliness, or lifestyle differences can create a negative living experience for all. Living together means students must learn to communicate effectively, respect each other’s personal space, and develop mutual understanding.

At CityBlock, we encourage a welcoming community culture that promotes respect, understanding, and open communication between students, providing support and resources to students to ensure a positive communal living experience.

So, if you’re looking for ensuite student rooms in Lancaster and want to experience the luxury of purpose-built student accommodation, look no further than CityBlock. Please get in touch to book your room, we’re almost completely sold out for 2023/2024, so be quick!
The post Purpose-Built vs. Multiple Occupancy Student Housing first appeared on CityBlock.

As leading student accommodation providers across England for almost 20 years, we have first-hand experience of why booking your accommodation early is crucial. So, in today’s blog, we’re giving our top five reasons for booking early, including managing stress, ensuring you get the room you want, and saving money.

1. Save Money

The first reason, and arguably the most important for students, is that booking your room early can save you money in many ways. Mainly, this is because if you leave it until the last minute, the lower-priced rooms are no longer available. As the academic year approaches, the availability of rooms decreases, with students snapping them up early. By booking as soon as possible, you have access to a wider range of affordable options to better suit your student budget.

Additionally, you can plan and budget your expenses by booking early. Your accommodation is usually your biggest expense as a student, so it’s really important to get it booked, so you know where you stand with the rest of your money.

At CityBlock, we offer a Fixed Price Guarantee, leaving you to book with confidence that you won’t find any hidden costs or rent increases during your contract.

2. Give Yourself a Stress-Free Experience

It’s no secret that getting ready to start university is a stressful experience. And, with your sixth form or college studies coming to an end, you may have exams, assignments, and your results to think about on top of everything involved with moving to your university’s city.

As you get closer to moving day, you must try to remain as calm as possible to ensure a positive experience with starting university. Booking your accommodation early can help as it alleviates stress from the lead-up to your new start.

In addition, give your parents peace of mind by booking early. Some students forget that moving to university is stressful for parents, too, so make sure they know you have a safe place to live when you move out.

3. Freedom of Room Choice

Here at CityBlock, we have ten different room types to choose from, which suit all types of students and their needs. From four-bedroom clustered flats to studio apartments, we are confident that we offer the best value and quality of accommodation you could expect; you’re sure to find what you need from us.

For example, our Standard Single and Superior Single Ensuite rooms, at Gillows, in Lancaster are both perfect for those who want the privacy of their own bathroom with the benefit of spacious communal rooms for socialising. These rooms are ideal for students wanting extra space for themselves with all the great benefits CityBlock has to offer, including fantastic storage solutions and a large desk area

To guarantee you get what you want, you must book early to avoid disappointment, as we have limited availability and rooms are going fast. So, don’t wait around scrolling through pictures of your favourites and imagining how you’ll personalise your room, book it before someone else beats you to it!

4. Plenty of Time to Get Organised

As mentioned, when you book your student accommodation early, you give yourself a much more stress-free experience, which is exactly what you need to ensure your moving process is positive. In addition, your accommodation is the main factor you need to organise before starting university, so once that is ticked off and you’ve booked your ideal room with CityBlock, you can get started on everything else.

When it comes to making your university checklist, the more time to have to write it and start checking things off, the better. And, once you have your room secured, you can be certain about what comes with it and what things you’ll need to prepare over the summer.

For example, all our rooms come with an extensive list of things included, such as:

WiFi

Utility bills

Bike storage

Weekly room, kitchen & living area, cleaning

Fully equipped kitchens (Including plates, pans, glasses & utensils)

This means our residents have very little to organise before coming to university and can focus on other exciting things such as décor and personal touches to make their rooms feel like home.

5. You Have the Opportunity to Live With Your Friends

One of the best and most exciting aspects of moving away from your hometown to start university is meeting new people and making friends for life. However, this is incredibly daunting for many people, and the thought of living with people you have never met before could cause anxiety in the lead-up to moving in.

Luckily for you, here at CityBlock, you get the opportunity to live with your friends when you choose our group bookings and get in early! So whether you want to live with your friends from college or sixth form who are all attending university in the same city, or you’re in your second or third year and want to live with friends, you made in previous years at university, this is a fantastic option.

Not only do you get to live with your friends, but if six or more people join the group booking for our Lancaster student accommodation, you get a £50 Amazon voucher each! Think of what you could do with that!

However, this unmissable opportunity to live with your friends is only available to those who book early, as if you leave it last minute, we may not have enough rooms to accommodate your friend group.

Avoid disappointment, stress, and money by booking your accommodation early. We have incredible, high-quality, secure student accommodation in Lancaster; book now to secure your room!
The post 5 Reasons to Book Your Student Accommodation Early first appeared on CityBlock.

December is here, and the question on every student’s mind is, “how am I going to get through this month on a major budget?”. Well, do not fear. The most important thing to remember is that you’re not alone, student or not, most people spend time worrying about money during the festive period. Not only this, but if you are staying in your student accommodation this Christmas, you may feel down about not seeing family or friends and feeling lonely.

Here at CityBlock, we’re here for you, and we understand the struggles that students can face over Christmas, which is why we have compiled this guide to surviving Christmas to help you out.

What Struggles Could I Face During the Christmas Period, As a Student?

While most see this as the most wonderful time of the year, students all over the country also have anxiety when the festive season comes around for several reasons, such as:

Money struggles. It’s no secret that students are usually on a budget, longing for their loans to drop into their bank accounts. Well, with the financial pressures of Christmas, these money struggles are heightened.

Not being able to go home. Unfortunately, some people, and more often than not international students, cannot visit home over the festive period, which can be incredibly upsetting and lead to feelings of loneliness.

Juggling study with festive fun. University doesn’t stop just because it’s Christmas. However, juggling studying with festive plans can cause work to pile up and become overwhelming.

Although this sounds all doom and gloom, there is plenty you can do to tackle this negativity around Christmas and really enjoy yourself this December.

Packing Made Perfect

If you are going home for Christmas, you may have questions about what to take with you and what to leave in your student accommodation. Luckily for you, our student accommodation in Lancaster is incredibly secure, so whatever you choose to leave there will be waiting for you upon your return.

When it comes to packing, start early. Plan your Christmas outfits and make sure they are washed, dried, and in your suitcase long before you need to leave. Think about what you’ll need while home and what you can leave behind. For example, you may need your skincare products, but you won’t need to bring your towels.

In addition, don’t forget to empty your fridge before you leave halls for Christmas. The last thing you want is a fridge full of mould or a fruit fly infestation when you get back in the new year!

Have a Merry Flatmas

If you’re not travelling home for Christmas, don’t think that means you can’t enjoy yourself. There is plenty you can do to have a merry flatmas, such as:

Decorating your accommodation. Get the fairy lights plugged in, whack the tree up, and hang tinsel around the room. Do whatever you can to inject Christmas into your accommodation and make your space warm and festive.

Secret Santa. If others in your flat, house, or building are staying over Christmas, why not organise a Secret Santa? This is a great way to get to know those you live with and spread some festive cheer.

Prepare a Christmas dinner. No Christmas is complete without food, so make sure to prepare a big dinner on the big day and tuck into all your favourite goodies. Don’t forget the gravy!

Christmas Dinner = Sorted

Whether you’re celebrating the last time your flatmates will be together before everyone leaves to spend time with their families or you’re preparing to cook on the big day itself, planning your Christmas meal is essential.

Cooking the perfect student Christmas dinner is all about preparation. By starting early, you have time to plan what you need to buy, organise your budget, and practice your roast potatoes, so you don’t have any nasty surprises on the day.

Don’t forget, if spending time in the kitchen isn’t your thing, there are plenty of pubs around CityBlock’s centrally located accommodation blocks; just make sure to book in early to avoid disappointment.

Festive Trips Out

The short days and long nights mean that if you sleep in or tuck yourself away to study all day, you may miss out on essential vitamin D and feel low and tired. Ensure you put time aside for festive trips out during the day to make the most of the daylight. Lancaster has fantastic Christmas markets, so why not leave your flat and enjoy what the markets offer? Whether it be festive pork pies, Christmas presents, or fruit cakes, you’re sure to find everything you need to fill your belly and your Christmas gift bags.

Getting Cosy at Home

Being cosy, drinking hot chocolate and sitting in front of the TV in pyjamas with friends and family is arguably the best part about Christmas. Don’t forget, there’s a Christmas movie for everyone, so whatever your and your flatmates’ preferences, you’re sure to find something good to watch this festive season.

Unfortunately, we don’t permit candles in our student accommodation, but there are plenty of other ways to create a cosy vibe in your flat. Get some lamps or fairy lights and switch the main light off; ambient lighting is the main event in a cosy room. Additionally, give everywhere a spring clean and spritz some festive-scented air freshener or get a diffuser to fill the room with the smell of pine needles, wintery forests, and seasonal spices.

No Budget? No Problem!

As mentioned, one of the primary issues for students is a low budget, which can be especially stressful during Christmas. The pressure of buying presents for friends and family, budgeting for trips out, and Christmas décor and food on top of bills and usual outgoings can cause a lot of mental strain.

But do not worry; an important thing to remember is that everyone is in the same boat, so don’t put too much pressure on yourself. When buying presents on a student budget, make sure to take advantage of sales and get crafty when you can; these two hacks will no doubt lessen your stress.

Catching Up With Studies

Before fully immersing yourself into the festive spirit, you must get organised for Christmas in terms of university work. Create a plan and stick to it, leaving room to contact your tutors and receive responses before they, too, go on Christmas break.

The last thing you want to be doing is studying during your well-deserved time off and, arguably worse, having the looming dread of deadlines. So, get ahead and stay ahead before it’s too late.

Here at CityBlock, we’re always here for you if you need advice on dealing with student struggles, and don’t forget your flatmates are most likely in the same position as you, so talking to them is always worthwhile. So, if you reside in our student rooms in Lancaster, our friendly and knowledgeable team is here for you over Christmas and beyond.

We believe it’s important that your student accommodation feels like home during your stay. Luckily, this can easily be achieved with a few minor changes to your space.

Whilst there are generally specific rules you must follow when decorating (you can’t be let loose with a paintbrush or wallpaper stripper), you can still personalise your room enough to make it feel like your space back home.

So, as leading providers of student accommodation in Lancaster, we’re offering our top tips for personalising your student room here at CityBlock.

Why Personalising Your Student Room Matters

Your student room is your sanctuary during the ups and downs of university, so it’s essential that it’s a place you can escape to after a hard day.

When you first visit your accommodation, you will notice it’s a blank canvas. This is because we have to accommodate all types of people, and one person’s taste will ultimately differ from the next. So, use this blank canvas to your advantage and make your room your own with these little tweaks and additions that turn a plain space into your temporary home.

Photographs

If you have a room at any of our other locations, one of the most effective ways to add some personality to the space is to use photographs. So, before you move to university, make sure to take pictures of everything you love from home.

Your family, friends, special memories, favourite places from your hometown, and of course, all your furry friends. Having these moments around your room can relax you during particularly stressful days or when you’re missing home more than usual.

Whether you use standalone frames, pin them to your notice board, or use damage-free wall hanging strips, decorate your room with photographs to put a smile on your face and make your room feel more ‘you’.

Using Your Notice Board as a Memory Board

In most student rooms, you’ll have a standard noticeboard; if not, we recommend purchasing one for a few different reasons. First, you can use it to keep track of your university work by pinning to-do lists, writing essential notes on the whiteboard, and, of course, hanging it where you will see it every day, so you don’t miss anything.

Additionally, you can use it as a memory board and pin a collection of keepsakes such as freshers’ wristbands, photobooth pictures, flyers from events, receipts from days out, and other bits and pieces. This is a wall-mounted memory board and a great talking point for guests in your room.

Choosing Fun Bedding and Home Comforts

Making your room comfy and cosy should be a priority as you’ll be sleeping in a new environment; doing everything you can to settle in and get a good night’s sleep is essential. Choose fun bedding in your favourite colours and decorate your bed with blankets, pillows, and other home comforts.

In addition, the colours and patterns you choose will help you sprinkle some personality into your room and make it feel more like your space.

Creating Sections in Your Space

Before moving to university, many students worry that they’ll be cramped up in a small space with no room to get dressed, let alone eat, work, and have guests over. Well, even in our smallest rooms, there is plenty of space to make it your own. We recommend using that to your advantage and creating sections; for example, keep work at your desk to separate work from relaxing. Inject some personality into these spaces by getting some stationery and office items for your workspace and, as mentioned, some cosy home comforts for your bed.

Additionally, some of our ensuite student rooms in Lancaster come with fully equipped kitchenettes; Pots and pans, chopping boards to dinner sets. Practice your culinary skills, get some work done at your desk, and then cosy up in bed with some Netflix.

Decorating Safely

Of course, one of the most important things about decorating your student’s room is doing it safely and within the rules of your student accommodation provider.

Here are our top tips for keeping your deposit and not damaging your room when decorating:

Damage-free wall hanging strips. As mentioned, having photographs around your room is a great way to add personality and reminders of home. However, most accommodation providers won’t allow you to hang nails, so framed canvases and picture frames are out of the question. That’s why we suggest using damage-free wall-hanging strips! These life-saving strips of tape are strong enough to hold frames onto walls. And when you leave, simply pull the tape down, and it will be as if nothing was there.

Self-contained terrariums. Plants are a great way to add life to your room, but they can be messy and stain carpets if they spill soil. Choose self-contained terrariums and keep soil, water, and other mess inside the jars.

Battery-operated candles. Of course, candles are a huge fire risk and are not permitted in almost every student accommodation. Choose battery-operated ones to get the cosy feeling of candles and avoid the fire risk.

Here at CityBlock, we encourage our residents to decorate our student accommodation, following our guidelines.

Our team is on hand and looking forward to hearing from you, for your 2023-24 booking.
