Everything decision we make and process we implement has been thought of with our resident’s safety at the forefront. This also includes our weekly cleaning service, which we believe is equally important for resident health and safety. On top of this, we ask that all residents take personal responsibility for cleaning and hygiene to ensure the bedrooms and communal areas remain sanitary for themselves and other members of the accommodation. Packing and Preparing for University

So, first of all, you must consider the bits you will need when you arrive at university. We’ve compiled a packing list below of the essentials, but there are a few things to consider before starting your shopping list.

Is your accommodation booked, and if so – what’s included? Our student accommodation in Lancaster has access to a fully equipped kitchen, for example. This means while you may want to pack your favourite mug, you won’t need to think about any of the appliances, like a microwave or for that matter, any crockery and cutlery.

You’ll also want to check that you have all the necessary bits for working on your essays and assignments. You will need a computer, but whether a desktop or a laptop is better depends on your course, how much space your bedroom offers and your budget.

Bedding will also depend on your chosen accommodation. We have a range of rooms offering different sized beds, from singles through to king size. So before you buy the most beautiful bedspread, you may want to check which size will fit.

The easiest way to pack is by splitting items into rooms, or if you opt for a studio apartment, then splitting the lists by use. The main rooms you will be packing for as a university student are the bedroom, bathroom and kitchen, or sleeping, cleaning and cooking.

Bedroom:

• Bedding (in the right size), including duvet, pillows, duvet sets, sheets, and a mattress protector should you want one. Include a spare for washing days
• Cushions

• Computer and all cables, monitor, keyboard, mouse

• Clothes for all seasons, coat hangers and an umbrella
• A transportable laundry bag – your laundrette will be a walk away and a drying rack/clothes horse for those items that can’t tumble dry

• Medicines
• A TV – communal areas may have one, but your room might not – check ahead of packing, you may also want to pack speakers and any games consoles you will miss
• Important documents such as your university acceptance letter, ID, student finance documents and accommodation paperwork

Bathroom:

• Shampoo, conditioner, shower gel, shaving foam, razors
• Toothbrush and toothpaste
• Soap
• Toilet cleaner
• Towels, don’t forget the hand towel

Kitchen:

• Check your accommodation regarding things like mugs, cutlery, and plates, you may need them some places, but at CityBlock you won’t

Home to the Ashton Memorial featured in the final series of the Peaky Blinders, when open to the public, you can view the incredible architecture and views of the park for no cost. What You’ll Need for Your Student Christmas Dinner:

This recipe will keep four hungry students very well fed; if you’re hosting a bigger get-together, just double the quantities – you might end up with leftovers, but they’ll taste great in sandwiches. Also, we’ve opted for chicken over turkey, as the price of turkey tends to skyrocket around Christmas time.

Ingredients

1 Large Whole Chicken
1 lemon
1 Onion
4 Potatoes
4 Carrots
4 Parsnips
2 Knobs of butter
12 Chipolata Sausages
6 Rashes of Streaky Bacon
1 Box of Stuffing Mix
1 Chicken Stock Cube
2 tsp Flour

Preparation

Start by peeling your carrots, parsnips and potatoes, then cut into large chunks. Par-boil your potatoes for 10 minutes to soften them for the best results.

Rub one knob of butter between the chicken skin and meat and the other over the top of the chicken skin. Peel the skin off the onion, chop it in half and insert it inside the chicken, along with half the lemon – This will ensure your chicken comes out nice and succulent.

Place your chicken in the centre of a large roasting tray and surround it with your vegetables and potatoes. Drizzle everything with oil and mix up with vegetables to ensure everything is evenly coated. Season generously with salt and pepper.

Cooking

Heat up your oven to 220^oC / 200^oC fan. Once the oven is hot, pop the tray in the oven and roast for 20 minutes, then remove and use a spoon to carefully turn the veg. If you want to add Brussel spouts, mix them in at this point. Put the roast meat back in the oven and turn the heat down to 200^oC / 180^oC fan. Cook for a further 50 minutes until the chicken is thoroughly cooked and the vegetables are soft.

Sides

Whilst your chicken is roasting, you can prepare the trimmings. First, make up your stuffing by mixing with boiling water as per the packet instructions. Once the mix is cool enough to handle, shape the stuffing into balls (you usually get about 12 from a packet) and arrange on a foil-lined baking tray.

Next, slice your bacon rashes in two lengthways and around the sausage to make your pigs in blankets. Add these to your baking tray with the stuffing balls.

Bake the stuffing balls and pigs in blankets for 15-20 minutes, putting them in the oven when the chicken has 20 minutes left to ensure everything is ready at the same time.

For the gravy, add a pint of boiling water to your stock cube, 2 tsp of flour to thicken and the juices from your roasting tray. Whisk it all together over a low heat on the hob for a delicious homemade gravy.
