It’s not always going to be easy co-habiting with others. But that doesn’t mean it’s a license to go writing passive-aggressive notes, or putting post-it notes on absolutely everything. Choose a housemate with whom, even when the chips are down (and the laundry’s piling up), you feel comfortable talking about problems.

Look Beyond First Impressions

That guy or girl you’re interviewing may be the friendliest person you’ve ever met. They laugh at your jokes, tell awesome anecdotes, and really seem like they’ll fit in. Know who else is like that? Psychopaths. Ok, we’re not suggesting you’ll get brutally murdered in your sleep, but it’s important to judge a person on more than just their amiable exterior.

At Lancaster’s CityBlock, even if you’re living with friends, you’ll have your own private en-suite to retreat to after a night out or a long day of studying. Clear communication and mutual respect go a long way, and CityBlock’s facilities make managing shared living straightforward and stress-free.

Study Habits Matter

Finding out about your potential housemate’s study habits is crucial. If there’s any chance they’ll cause a distraction while you’re trying to work, it’s going to end the same way as Russell Brand and Katy Perry’s relationship, badly.

Living in a private ensuite means you can get the quiet, focused space you need without sacrificing the social aspect of sharing kitchens and lounges. Discuss expectations early so everyone’s habits are clear from the start.

Make Domestic Life Easy

Living with someone requires a whole lot of give and take, but CityBlock simplifies it. With all bills included, from WiFi to water and utilities, budgeting is straightforward. Plus, weekly cleaning and secure bike storage make communal living easier.

Talking about chores early on helps avoid misunderstandings, but the privacy of your ensuite means you can always escape to your own personal space.

The Benefits of Living with CityBlock

A top tip for choosing the right bank for you is to consider the largest 0% overdraft you can receive, unless the huge freebies beat it. Be aware that some banks offer “guaranteed” overdrafts while others offer “up to” amounts, guaranteed means you’ll definitely get the stated limit if accepted, while “up to” amounts depend on your credit record. Avoid picking a branch just because it is the closest and never go over your overdraft limit!

One of the mainstays of student life is the nightlife, and if you’re coming to Lancaster University to study and nightlife is important to you then you’ll find it’s no exception.

If it’s your first time away from home then venturing out into an unknown city for the first time can be quite daunting, and you might not know the best bars or pubs to go to, or even where they are. However, Lancaster University’s campus is well-known for its lively nightlife, and it’s just a 15 minute bus ride to the university from our CityBlock apartments, with a regular bus service running to and from the city centre to the campus.

Pubs & Bars

The campus has a multitude of venues that provide a vibrant and lively student atmosphere in a home from home environment, catering specially for the student lifestyle.

Here at CityBlock we’ve put together the ultimate guide to Lancaster University’s pubs and bars to ensure that you can get the best on-campus experience when going out.

The Northern Oak: County College

This bar offers a wonderful contemporary atmosphere. During the day, it’s a popular chill out bar where students come to drink coffee or eat snacks from a wide range of different light bites on offer, but during the evening, it offers a livelier atmosphere. With regular live music performances every alternate Wednesday and fortnightly stand-up from the County Comedy Club, this bar is a great place to go with your mates. This bar is very popular with societies, and is known for its lively fun and friendly atmosphere.

Trevor Bar: Furness College

Trevor bar has been open for more than 40 years! This bar hosts a number of exciting events throughout the year, including its very own real ale festival in December. In addition, it’s the home of many other college socials including international theme nights and Jam-in-Furness, the bar’s jazz night. Trevor is a vibrant and lively bar and it’s one of the traditional starting points for the vast majority of college socials.  Trevor was recently re-launched, and now has a great selection of quality wines, along with all of its usual favourites.  It also has a range of locally brewed ales from Lancaster University’s on-campus brewery.

The Mill: Fylde College

For a sports bar with a difference, you should definitely pay The Mill a visit. With its recently re-launched food menu, The Mill boasts that it’s currently the only place in Lancaster where you can buy a crocodile, kangaroo or even a llama burger! They also serve food until 9:30pm, seven days a week, and have an excellent menu with a wide variety of different foods such as burrito wraps, pizzas and burgers. If you’re looking for great place to watch sports with your mates, then this is the place for you. All major fixtures are shown throughout the bar on HDTVs, as well as their big screen. There’s also the One Big Kitchen event, which is a big party held every Saturday with great drinks deals and a fantastic environment.

Grizedale Cafe Bar: Grizedale College

Located at Lancaster University’s South Spine, the Grizedale Café Bar is one of the main hubs when it comes to starting off on a night out around Lancaster University’s campus, and also when it comes to eating great food. This bar has a wonderful contemporary atmosphere, along with a wonderful menu of top quality food including delicious pizzas, hot wraps and scrumptious doughnuts. This is also the place to go on campus for classy cocktails. From Strawberry Daiquiris to Long Island Iced Teas, it’s a great place to come and chill whilst visiting Lancaster University’s many other great campus bars.

Barkers: Cartmel College

Tucked away in Cartmel College on the South West Campus, Barkers is one of those places that feels instantly familiar. It’s the kind of bar where you can settle in for a chilled pint, catch the match with mates, or just grab something decent to eat between lectures. The menu’s full of proper pub favourites, think burgers, loaded fries, and a Sunday roast that’s got a bit of a reputation across campus.

It’s also a solid spot for events, with a lively atmosphere when things kick off, but still laid-back enough for a quiet coffee during the day. Speaking of which, they serve Starbucks, so whether you’re after a flat white or something sweet and frothy, you’re sorted. Barkers isn’t flashy, but that’s part of the charm, it’s reliable, friendly, and always a good shout when you’re on the South West side of campus.

Restaurants

It’s not all about the bars, campus also has some great spots for food and coffee. Whether you’re after something fresh and healthy, a proper meal, or just a good brew, there are a few places that stand out.

HIVE

HIVE sits on the first floor of Health Innovation One and brings a fresh, relaxed vibe to the campus. It’s known for its healthy, feel-good menu, with vegan and low-sugar options that actually taste good. You’ll find locally sourced Atkinson’s coffee, fresh meals, and a few sweet treats too. Whether you’re grabbing lunch or meeting up for a chat, it’s a bright, open space that makes it easy to hang out or get stuff done.

The Marketplace

Up on North Campus in County South, The Marketplace is a solid choice for a proper hot meal. The menu changes daily, always offering two meat options and something veggie, plus hot sides and a fresh salad bar. It’s a good shout if you’re after something filling and balanced, and they serve Costa coffee too, made fresh at the bar.

The Deli

Right off Alexandra Square, The Deli is a cosy spot with a brunch menu that covers everything from pancakes and mac n’ cheese to fresh salads and flatbreads. They serve Atkinson’s coffee and specialty teas, making it a great place to grab something warm and tasty in the middle of the day.

So, your university life is finally over. It’s no longer acceptable to sit at 11am drinking Jäger bombs and eating cheap noodles. You’re suddenly faced with something you’ve been dreading for three years: getting a job. It’s time to hang up the fancy dress costumes and brush the dust off your best suit. Finding a job after Uni may be a difficult task, but here at CityBlock we’ve got a few tips that should give a start on your career ladder.

Find Out What You Want

This might seem like an obvious point, but it’s also one of the most important. You chose an accounting degree three years ago, but a lot could have changed in three years, and you aren’t locked to that path forever. Before you start applying for jobs have a think about what you really want to do. It will be far easier to get a job in something you’re passionate about.

Careers are much less linear than they used to be, and you will find people pivot more often, try freelancing, or even start side hustles alongside their main job. Don’t think “what do I want forever?”, think “what do I want to explore right now?” The sooner you get comfortable experimenting, the faster you’ll figure out your path. Passion and curiosity are still great guides.

Have a Good CV

You might have had the best job experience, got the best grades in the class, and even won three gold medals at the Olympics, but if your CV is badly designed, contains mistakes, or doesn’t display information well then, you’ll be put straight in the “no” pile.

Most employers use AI-driven applicant tracking systems (ATS) to filter applications, so simplicity is key. That means:

Use a clean, consistent design (avoid fancy graphics and unusual fonts).

Clearly separate sections — education, skills, and experience.

Tailor your CV to every job you apply for, highlighting the most relevant experience.

Keep it concise (ideally 1–2 pages).

Think of your CV as a storytelling document: it needs to make it obvious, in just a few seconds, why you’re a strong candidate.

Take Advantage of Career Services

You know the careers services you have at Uni that you’ve never been to because you think they’re boring? Well, they’re actually very useful and totally free. Many university careers departments offer online CV checkers, virtual mock interviews, and webinars tailored to your industry.

And if you’ve already graduated, don’t write them off, a lot of universities give alumni free ongoing access. Use that to your advantage when you’re stuck months (or even a couple of years) down the line.

Social Media

Social media isn’t just for posting photos of your flatmates drunk in a bush; you can actually use it to get a job. First things first though, make sure that your social media accounts are squeaky clean because 91% of employers will actually look through these to determine your fit for jobs.

It’s not just about avoiding digital mishaps; social media can also be one of your most powerful career-building tools:

LinkedIn is your living online CV and more. Keep it up to date with any skills, volunteer work, and certifications. Personalise your profile with a headline that quickly sums up who you are and what you’re looking for. Use the “About” section to share your story and ambitions, not just a list of achievements.

Showcase your skills! Share samples of your work on a digital based portfolio website or even record quick video explainers and upload to YouTube.

Network — politely. Reach out to professionals with a brief, personalised message if you’d like to learn about their role or company. Often, you’ll find people are happy to share advice or add you to their network. Never spam your CV but do engage in genuine conversation.

Internships

Gone are the days when the only way to gain experience was to take an unpaid internship. More companies now recognise the value of paying graduates for their time, and UK law has tightened up around unpaid work.

That said, experience is still everything. Volunteering, freelancing, contributing to open-source projects, or helping with community initiatives can make your CV stand out. Experience doesn’t always come from a traditional office job, so think broadly about ways you can show you’ve been proactive.

Forget About That 2:2

All the way through Uni, everybody is told that a 2:1 is the grade to aim for. It will open doors jobs, allow you to make more money and even give you a membership card to a super-secret club that nobody know about, right?

Actually, there’s very little difference in success between students achieving either grade with similar percentages of people with either grade being employed 6 months after graduating. Most of what holds people with a 2:2 back is their own mindset. More companies are shifting towards skills-first hiring, meaning they value what you can do rather than just what your degree classification says. Don’t count yourself out of applying for opportunities just because you have a 2:2. The fact you finished your degree already proves resilience and that goes a long way in the world of work.

Post Graduate Career Opportunities

No matter how unpredictable the job market feels, remember that starting your career is more about the journey than nailing the perfect first job. Every application, interview, or new project is a step forward. Stay open, keep building your skills, and back yourself, your path won’t look like anyone else’s, and that’s a good thing.

If you’re still a student moving into your final year or are about to do a post-graduate degree, then we’ve got you covered. Here at CityBlock we have a range of student accommodation so if you need somewhere to live while you’re studying, don’t hesitate to contact us.
The post 6 Tips for Getting a Job Straight Out of Uni first appeared on CityBlock.

If you have completed your A-levels this summer, A-level results day will be here sooner than you think. For those lucky enough to have secured an unconditional offer to a university on a course that you’re happy with, this day might creep up on you without you even noticing.

Take a deep breath; everything will be OK.

Fortunately, not getting your place doesn’t mean you can’t go to university this year. The Clearing process can match you to a university place yet to be filled, and there are plenty of Clearing places every year at many universities across the country. In 2023, 38,140 students secured places through clearing, up 15% from 2022, showing that clearing is increasingly becoming a viable route to university.

If you’re confused or uncertain how the process will work on the big day, here’s our very own survival guide to Clearing.

Key Dates for 2025

Before diving into the clearing process, it’s essential to know the critical dates for 2025:

A-level Results Day: Thursday, 14th August 2025

GCSE Results Day: Thursday, 21st August 2025

BTEC National Results: Released on or before 14th August 2025

Scottish Results (SQA): Released on 5th August 2025

Clearing Opening: 5th July 2025

Clearing Closing: 20th October 2025

What Happens if You Don’t Get Your Conditional Offer?

A conditional offer specifies the grades that a university requires you to meet for confirmation of your place. For example, a course may require the grades ABB in your A-levels, or they may want at least a B in a specific subject. This often means waiting until results day to see if your results have met this condition. If you don’t meet your conditional offer, these could be the following steps:

You May Get Accepted Anyway

Some universities may give you some leeway if you just missed out by one grade. This can depend on many things, such as if the university in question has fewer applicants than expected, so they lower the grade boundaries required.

You Get Accepted to Your Insurance Place

Your insurance place is the university you chose as your second choice. This may be an unconditional or conditional offer. If it’s conditional, you will still need to meet the conditions for the place to be confirmed. Upon being rejected by your firm choice, if you get accepted onto your insurance, this will be confirmed on results day.

The University May Offer an Alternative Course

Your firm place may not have gone through, but the university may offer you a place on a similar, alternative course if they still have spaces available. You can decide whether to accept or reject this.

You Go into Clearing

If you still want to go to university this year but get rejected from (or don’t want to accept) your firm or insurance place, you can go through Clearing to find a university that will take you. Clearing has evolved significantly from its traditional role. Today, 32% of clearing users are “mind changers” who decline their original firm choice to pursue different opportunities, while only 30% are students who didn’t meet their offer conditions. This shift reflects changing student expectations and increased flexibility in university admissions.

Do All Universities Offer Clearing Places?

University Clearing places vary annually based on the number of applicants a university gets and whether they can accept more students. There are different ways to find out about Clearing places before results day – and it’s a good idea to note a few down as alternatives to save you time on results day.

First, you can use the UCAS Search Tool to search for specific institutions or courses that have places available. Additionally, UCAS now offers ‘Clearing matches’ which shows you your top 50 course matches based on your application and qualifications. Alternatively, you can contact universities directly to ask about Clearing places. Here’s what you need to know about Clearing places at Lancaster.

Do Any Universities Not Have Clearing Places?

While most universities will participate in Clearing, some of the more competitive universities, such as Cambridge and Oxford, don’t.

Similarly, some competitive courses like Medicine, Dentistry and Veterinary Science are unlikely to have Clearing places, as they are already oversubscribed.

Suppose you have incredibly impressive grades and a wealth of extracurricular activities under your belt. In that case, it could be worth contacting the universities directly if you think you might be accepted, but don’t be too disheartened if they tell you to try again next year.

Changing University Course After Accepting Offer

If results day rolls around and you’ve had a sudden change of heart about studying at your confirmed university or course, despite getting the grades required, you can still go into Clearing to find an alternative place.

UCAS now allows students to release themselves into Clearing if they have a change of heart about their university or the course they want to study. Simply log into the UCAS Hub and choose the “Decline Your Place” button. Follow the steps, and you can release yourself into Clearing and select the option you want from the Clearing lists.

As this process declines your place at your conditional or firm university, you must be 100% sure you no longer want the place, as it will be lost to you as soon as you complete it. There is no guarantee that your place will still be there for you if you change your mind after looking through the Clearing lists. It’s a good idea to get verbal confirmation from a university of a Clearing offer before doing this.

How To Apply Through Clearing?

As mentioned, you will use the UCAS Search Tool and your personalised Clearing matches to find universities that still have Clearing options. When you’ve found courses you’re interested in, you need to call those institutions and give them your Clearing number (from Hub) and Personal ID so they can find your application. Ask if they would accept you on the course you’re interested in and get a formal offer over the phone. If possible, try to take a look around their campus or see if your course director would be happy to meet you or talk to you directly or explore virtual campus tours and online events that many universities now offer.

Once you’ve had your offer, you can add your Clearing choice through Hub. That institution should then confirm, and that confirmation is you accepting the offer. You can still be re-released into Clearing again if you change your mind.

Supporting your Mental Health During Results Day

Results day and the clearing process can be incredibly stressful for students. It’s important to recognise that feelings of anxiety, disappointment, or uncertainty are completely normal during this time. Universities and colleges now provide enhanced mental health support services specifically during results day and clearing periods.

If you’re feeling overwhelmed:

Remember that many successful students have found their perfect course through clearing

Seek support from family, friends, or professional counselling services

Take breaks from the process when needed – clearing runs until 20th October 2025

Consider that this is just one pathway among many to achieve your goals

If You Have to Call UCAS…

Sometimes, despite all the research and preparation, nothing can prepare you for how you react to seeing that you haven’t got the grades you need or that you’ve had a change of heart about your firm place. In this case, you may end up phoning the UCAS helpline on results day.

The UCAS phones will be incredibly busy on results day. So, to get the information you need as quickly as possible, take note of the following:

Have your Personal ID ready

Before the person on the phone can do anything to help you, they will ask you for your UCAS Personal ID – this is so they can access your application. They will also ask a couple of questions to confirm your identity, such as your birthday or address before they can proceed. Your ID is displayed on every email that UCAS has sent you.

Only a nominated person can call on your behalf

When you signed up to UCAS, you may have appointed a person to contact UCAS on your behalf, such as your mum or dad. When you call UCAS, the person on the phone will confirm who they’re speaking to, and if they’re not talking to you or your nominated person, they will not be able to help. It’s best to call them yourself and have your friend or sibling close by for support – not calling on your behalf.

If UCAS don’t have your results, you need to call your college/sixth form

If your university place is unconfirmed because the university doesn’t have your grades yet, it’s your college/sixth form you need to call. UCAS doesn’t gather results from colleges and sixth forms. UCAS is simply the middleman between the colleges/sixth forms and universities; if your college hasn’t sent your results through to UCAS, they’re the ones you should be contacting to find out what’s going on.

Alternative Qualification Pathways

For 2025, it’s important to recognise that students enter clearing with diverse qualifications beyond traditional A-levels:

BTEC National students: Results released on 14th August 2025, same as A-levels

BTEC First and Technical students: Results may be released on 21st August 2025

T-Level students: A growing qualification pathway with results on 14th August 2025

These alternative pathways, BTEC and T-Levels are increasingly recognised by universities, and many clearing places are available for students with these qualifications

What Happens After Clearing?

Once you’ve secured your place in Clearing, you can relax! But not for too long as you’ll need to start thinking about student accommodation, letting student finance know about your change of institution, and familiarising yourself with your new university.

You should get confirmation from your university about student accommodation availability; many keep accommodation reserved for clearing students. However, this is not always the case, and sometimes you may need to look at alternative options such as private student houses or student flats.

In which case, CityBlock have you covered for Lancaster. We have Lancaster student accommodation available for the next academic year and for your future years. Call us today to learn more about our incredible range of available rooms.

From everyone here at CityBlock, we wish you the very best of luck for results day and remember that clearing can be a positive pathway to finding the right course for you
The post The Results Day Survival Guide to Clearing 2025 first appeared on CityBlock.

Exam season is fast approaching. What once felt like a distant deadline is now looming large, bringing with it a mix of anticipation, stress, and maybe even a little panic. Whether you feel fully prepared or like you could use another year of revision, exams are inevitable. But with the right preparation and mindset, you can navigate this challenging period with confidence and calm.

Here’s a comprehensive exam survival kit to help you make the most of your revision and perform at your best when it counts.

Using Colours for Exam Preparation

Incorporating coloured pens and highlighters into your study routine can be a valuable strategy for enhancing your memory. While you should always write in black ink during the exam, using different colours in your notes can help you remember key information more effectively.

Here are some tips on how to use coloured pens to your advantage:

Assign specific colours to different types of information. For example, use green for key dates, pink for important equations, and blue for definitions or concepts.

Highlight the main ideas or critical terms in your notes with these colours to make them stand out visually. This can help jog your memory during the exam.

When reviewing your notes, pay attention to the colours you’ve used; they can serve as a mnemonic device to recall the information more easily.

Although you won’t write your exam answers in coloured pens, bringing them with you can serve as a mental cue, helping you quickly access and recall essential parts of your notes during the test.

Fuel Your Brain with Smart Nutrition

Long revision sessions can drain your energy and concentration. Skipping meals or relying on sugary snacks might give you a quick boost, but they often lead to crashes that disrupt your focus.

Scientific research highlights the benefits of brain-boosting foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants, and complex carbohydrates. These nutrients support memory, cognitive function, and sustained energy.

Try assembling a snack pack with:

Nuts and seeds: Almonds, walnuts, and pumpkin seeds provide healthy fats and protein.

Fresh fruits and vegetables: Blueberries, carrots, and bell peppers offer antioxidants and vitamins.

Whole-grain crackers or rice cakes: These provide slow-releasing carbohydrates to maintain energy levels.

Hydration: Drink plenty of water throughout the day to prevent dehydration, which can impair concentration.

For a quick and nutritious option, prepare a smoothie the night before using spinach, banana, and nut butter to start your day energised.

Encouraging Post-Its

Staying motivated and retaining information can be tough during intense revision periods. A simple but effective tool is the strategic use of post-it notes.

Write down:

Key facts or formulas you need to memorise.

Motivational quotes or positive affirmations to keep your spirits up.

Reminders of your goals and progress.

Stick these notes around your study space, where you’ll see them regularly. This technique leverages passive learning—absorbing information subconsciously—and helps maintain a positive mindset.

Maximise Your Revision Efficiency

Time is your most valuable resource during exam season. Effective time management can reduce stress and improve your retention.

Here’s how to make the most of your study hours:

Create a detailed revision timetable: Break your subjects into manageable topics and allocate specific times to each.

Use the Pomodoro Technique: Study for 25 minutes, then take a 5-minute break. Repeat this cycle to maintain focus without burnout.

Set realistic goals: Daily and weekly targets help track progress and keep you motivated.

Incorporate spaced repetition: Revisiting material at increasing intervals strengthens long-term memory.

Starting your revision early allows your brain to consolidate knowledge gradually, reducing last-minute cramming and anxiety.

Prioritise Your Mental Health

Exam pressure can take a toll on your mental well-being, but managing stress is crucial for peak performance.

Consider these strategies:

Practice mindfulness and deep breathing exercises: Even a few minutes daily can calm your mind and improve focus.

Stay active: Regular physical exercise releases endorphins, which boost mood and cognitive function.

Prioritise sleep: Aim for 7-9 hours per night to enhance memory consolidation and alertness.

Seek support: Talk to friends, family, or university counselling services if you feel overwhelmed.

Remember, your mental health is as important as your academic preparation.

Create Your Perfect Study Recovery Space

Having the right environment for post-revision and exam life can greatly enhance your comfort and well-being. A serene, cosy, and well-lit space that is free from distractions allows you to relax and reflect on your experiences.

Easter break is a time to chill out and relax before you head back to the normality of being a student. Typically, universities in the UK have their Easter breaks around late March to early April, aligning with the traditional Easter holiday period. Not sure what to fill your time with during this much-needed break? Don’t worry! We’ve come up with a few ideas to make the most of your time away from lectures and assignments. Whether you’re looking to unwind, catch up on personal projects, or explore new interests, there’s plenty to choose from.

Before we Start

We felt it was important to bring this up before we get on the list. While we understand that you want to relax and not think about your university work, it’s a good idea to take advantage of this time to make some progress on your assignments. Trust us; you’ll appreciate it later when you return to university, and you can enjoy time with your friends instead of rushing to cram in last-minute revisions! Now with that out of the way lets see what else can be done this spring break.

Travel and Cultural Exploration

Why not consider going on a holiday, whether in the UK or beyond? The UK has many corners to explore, including Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland, each with a rich history. You can also easily travel to continental Europe, which is accessible by regular train, boat, and flight. If you have someone willing, you can even drive there. Take the time now, while you’re with friends at university, to create unforgettable memories.

Wellness and Self-Care

It’s perfectly fine to take this time as a mental pause to recalibrate and simply enjoy the beautiful upcoming weather. The sun is setting later each day, and it’s refreshing to finally see warmer days. Consider doing some gardening at local community gardens, or if you prefer to stay in, catch up on the TV series that everyone is talking about. Remember, this time is about you. As a university student, you have the freedom to make your own decisions, and the most important one is to focus on what is best for your wellness and self-care.

Volunteering and Community Engagement

Local charity shops always need volunteers, and participating in these programs enhances the image of students giving back to the community surrounding their university. Volunteering at food banks or similar initiatives helps you better understand the local area, encouraging you to step out of your academic comfort zone and engage with what the locals are doing day-to-day. You might even decide to stay after uni!

Social Events and Community Building

Consider students who are in the UK for the first time and may not have many connections outside the university. Expanding your friendship group to include different nationalities broadens your perspective. A great way to do this is through food—why not organise a potluck featuring different international dishes? This could be a fun way to get to know your classmates in modules that you don’t have as often.

Professional Networking and Career Development

This advice is especially important for those in their final years of university. Events organised by potential employers offer great opportunities to build networks and start thinking about your career path. While it may feel daunting, remember that many attendees are in the same position or have been through it before and are often willing to share their experiences.

Look for job expos, career fairs, and informational seminars relevant to your field. These events provide insights into career opportunities and practical advice on transitioning into the workforce. Engage with professionals, ask questions, and approach these opportunities with an open mind—any conversation could be a stepping stone to your next career move.

1. Celebrate with Friends

You may have been sacrificing your nights out during exam season, so meeting up with friends can be a great way to mark the end of this period. Whether you’re joining in on a night out at bars or clubs or simply want to enjoy an evening of board games, spending some quality time with friends will be a nice break from those late-night study sessions. Moreover, you can enjoy some socialisation within the comfort of your own building in our accommodation buildings, as we have dedicated social spaces equipped with TVs and activities to keep you occupied.

2. Cook a Fancy Meal

During exams, it can be easy to neglect cooking real meals for yourself, so now that you have some more free time, why not dedicate this to making a nourishing meal? Whether you’re attacking this solo or with your flatmates, spending some quality time cooking can help to destress and take your mind off anxiously waiting for results. Whether it’s a steak dinner or spaghetti bolognese, cooking a fancy meal is the perfect way to mark the end of exams. Even better yet, our exams come with dishwashers – so you don’t have to worry about washing up all your equipment at the end!

3. Retail Therapy

You’ve worked hard to complete those exams; it’s about time to treat yourself! If you’ve had your eye on a certain video game, book, or pair of trainers, you could mark this achievement by purchasing something for yourself. In-person shopping can be a great way to maximise your new free time, and with your CityBlock card, you get discounts to many local retailers and hospitality locations.

4. Family Time

We know that your university life can be fun and fulfilling but sometimes, after a lengthy few weeks of revision, the best thing to unwind is returning home to family. A home-cooked meal, time away from the library, and seeing your family pet can do wondrous things to make you feel revitalised and ready to tackle the next part of your university journey. Even if it’s just for a weekend, some family time can be an excellent way to destress after a hectic exam season.

5. Escape to Nature

If you’re studying in Lancaster, you are breathtakingly close to the wonders of the Lake District; in Reading, you’re close to the North Wessex Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, or you can journey a little further north to visit Sherwood Forest or even the Peak District National Park. Wherever you go, spending some time in the fresh air and greenery is great for the soul.

6. Catch Up on the TV You’ve Missed

If you’re a regular soap watcher, or have been taking some time away from your favourite shows, now is the perfect time to binge-watch all that you’ve missed. Grab some popcorn and get settled to watch all of the episodes you’re behind on. After a long period of intensive studying, it’s nice to let your brain have a break and unwind. Our communal areas have Freeview TVs available to use, too, if you want to relax with some friends.

7. Sleep

Sleepless nights are not uncommon when stressed about upcoming exams. If you’ve spent some late nights stressed about your papers or haven’t been getting your 8 hours in, now is the perfect time to catch up on some sleep. Have a lie in; after all, the hard part is done!

8. Start a New Hobby

It can be difficult to make time for self-care during exam season, so you may have neglected time to dedicate to things that aren’t related to university. Now that you have a bit more free time, picking up a new hobby can be a fantastic way to take your mind off results and get you involved with something other than staring at a screen or textbook. Whether it’s knitting or heading to the gym, you can now enjoy this time guilt-free.

Of course, the most sensible post-exam ritual is ensuring that you have somewhere to rest your laurels next year post-exam results.

Independence

Families are great, but sometimes we just want some independence. That’s the great thing about being a student! There’s no one to boss you around or tell you what to do, and you can be in complete control of your day. You get to decide all your own meals, when (and if) you do your laundry and try new things. Our onsite laundry facilities are open 24/7, perfect for those late night boosts of productivity.

Learning New Things

Before you skip past this point, wait! Yes, there are great aspects of being a student like the nightlife and making new friends. However, we mustn’t forget about the main reason why people come to university – to learn! At university you have more freedom to choose what you’d like to learn, and you get to specialise in your favourite subjects. In most courses, you get to choose your own modules and find something you genuinely enjoy. What’s more, is that you’re surrounded by experts in the subject, who can help you with any questions you have.

Student Discounts

We can’t deny that one of the key perks of being a student is the discounts. The majority of shops and restaurants offer some sort of student discount and depending on where you’re shopping these discounts can get pretty hefty! As a resident of CityBlock, you get exclusive access to discounts for local businesses, helping you to save even more.

Flexible Schedules

Trust us on this one, you’ll forever miss the days where your schedule is as flexible as it is in university. Of course, if you’re studying a course like medicine or nursing, you can perhaps ignore this point. But for the majority of courses, you’ll be able to wake up late, go to bed late, and work your day around your classes. Fancy a mid-morning session at the gym? Not a problem. Want to go to bed at 3am and wake up at 11am? When you’re a student, why not! We offer 24 hour security at all of our student accommodation sites, so you no longer have to worry about what time you need to be home by.

Making New Friends

Even though moving to university is daunting at first, it’s also the place where many people make their life-long friends. There are endless opportunities to make friends, from talking to classmates or joining a new society, you can make friends all throughout your time at university. At our locations, we have , making it even easier to meet new people. It might be nerve wracking to approach new people but remember that everyone’s in the same boat and is probably feeling the same as you are!

Nightlife

Another one of the key attractions of university is the nightlife. Some great memories can be made from going to bars, pubs and clubs with your friends and dancing the night away. In university, it’s socially acceptable to go out on a Wednesday night, so make the most of this whilst you can. Don’t forget, there are plenty of opportunities for those who aren’t a fan of drinking too. At our locations, we organise regular events including pizza, quiz, and games nights, to help you get to know your neighbours.

Holidays

The long breaks that you get at university are something we envy. They’re a great to relax and take your mind off work, and even go on a much need holiday. 4 weeks off at Christmas and Easter? 3 months off in the Summer? Don’t mind if we do, and if you choose to stay in our accommodation for multiple years we can even store your belongings for you over the summer too!
