Top Tips for Surviving Exam Season | CityBlock

As Easter passes, you will find yourself in the midst of the dreaded exam season. Long hours have been spent in preparation for this very moment and now is the time that your revision will finally pay off. However, there are some things you need to be doing during this period and there are some things you might want to do, but really shouldn’t.

So, what do you need to know and do in order to survive the upcoming exam season?

DO Know Your Schedule

Forgetting you have an exam is not a good excuse for missing one, it won’t fly with your professor and isn’t something you yourself will believe (deep down). Set alerts on your phone, put a big calendar on your wall and even have a post-it note in your shower stall if needs be.

If all else fails… camp out in the exam hall, eventually the exam you’re meant to be in will happen.

DO NOT Party

It is really tempting to let off some steam around exam period. Sure, the occasional hour or two of television watching is almost necessary so as not to go completely stir crazy. But, a night out? That has the potential to be more than a few hours of lost time. Especially after you factor in the hangover and extra sleep that usually follows such a night. Bottom line: avoid the booze and stay on track!

DO Sleep

An all-nighter may seem like a great idea at the time, but when you’re sat in your exam with zero hours of sleep you will be cursing past you. Get a full eight hours the night before the exam, combined with a banana ten minutes before the exam and you will be bursting with energy to answer all of those questions correctly!

DO NOT Delude Yourself

One of the worst things you can do during the exam season is to lie to yourself. What do we mean by that? Well, reading a page of your textbook for half an hour and then doing nothing for the rest of day is not considered revision in most people’s books. So, if you happen to be doing this and telling yourself that you’re revising really hard? That’s where the delusion kicks in.

Fooling yourself into thinking you’re doing a lot of revision when you’re not can be the worst thing to do during exam season, so avoid wherever possible!

DO Stay Positive

As the weeks drag by, it may feel like your exams will never be over. But, once you reach the light at the end of the tunnel it will seem as if the exam period flashed by in the blink of an eye. Just keep moving forward, take one exam at a time and it will be over before you know it!

DO NOT Suffer in Silence

Are you having a hard time? Don’t be afraid to speak out, to ask people for help and share some of your worries with your peers and mentors. They say a problem shared is a problem halved, it may surprise you how much better you feel about exams after discussing them with someone. Finding a particular subject hard? Then chat to your lecturer, find out what they would expect of the subject and if they have any helpful hints for what to focus on. At the end of the day, you may be very surprised by how much better you feel!
